Walking around Arimatsu's streets and experiencing tie-dyeing
Arimatsu, Nagoya, is famous for its tie-dye textiles. Cotton fabric is dyed with indigo, and the patterns change depending on how the threads are knotted. This traditional craft of the Arimatsu and Narumi districts of Nagoya is extremely time-consuming and labor-intensive, as every step is done by hand. Arimatsu shibori is unique in that each piece is handmade, meaning no two pieces are exactly alike.
Even overseas, "shibori" refers to Arimatsu. While it is a traditional craft, many techniques continue to be developed and refined.
On this tour, you will receive direct instruction from an Arimatsu shibori artisan and create your own Arimatsu shibori piece. You will create traditional Arimatsu tenugui, fashionable stoles, and other items under the guidance of an experienced Arimatsu shibori artisan, so even beginners can feel at ease. All materials and tools needed will be provided on site.
